Purpose of Role
Reporting to the Manager Exploration, the responsibility of this role is to oversee all exploration activities over the Chirano property including:
- Resource conversion drill program;
- Near Mine exploration along the Chirano trend;
- And, District exploration on the entire land position.
- Also ensure that service and/or operating standards are met (internally and/or externally). To initiate and undertake projects to optimize performance within exploration geology and to ensure adherence to industry regulations and organizational standards.
Key Areas of Responsibility & Duties
Functional Responsibilities
- Independently handles duties in exploration geology including detailed geological logging, ensuring geosciences best practices, drill planning, developing interpreted geological sections for resource modeling, report writing
- Acts as an advisor to management and staff on a variety of internal and/or external requests
- Provides input into budget or operating plans and major capital expenditures in exploration geology
- Integrates and interprets data related to RC and core drilling data, geologic mapping, geophysical data, as well as geochemical data
- Proposes new or more efficient work practices to optimize performance and to ensure adherence to industry regulations and organizational standards
- Contributes to the development of policies and practices related to exploration geology
- Monitors costs related to exploration geology and implements approved recommendations for maximizing operational efficiencies
- Assigns tasks and provides guidance on complex or escalated issues to less experienced employees through training and mentoring
- Participates in task forces related to exploration geology including designing exploration programs and evaluates results, site safety procedures and implementation
- Provides technical advice on exploration activities in the field as well as the office
- Provides geological input and consults with other departments at the mine site to ensure programs advanced on time and in a safe environment
- Provides input to geological and resource modeling
- Executes short and intermediate-term strategies and plans that support growth of Mine & Near Mine exploration geology; ensures strategies are concretely linked to the Exploration Department's overall strategy
- Coordinates the mine geology staff functions at the site related to geotechnical, mineral modelling, dewatering and ore resources / reserve estimate
Required Skills or Experience
- Formal professional designation in appropriate area of exploration geology (mandatory)
- Bachelor degree in Geology or a related geoscience is required, and a graduate degree in a related field (mandatory)
- Additional specialized education of up to 4 years (mandatory)
- 8-12 years of related work experience, with at least 5 years working on large, international mining projects (mandatory)
- Has a strong working knowledge of exploration techniques and a thorough understanding of drilling and assaying techniques
- English fluency (both verbal and written)
Additional Requirement
- Good working knowledge and skill with a PC utilizing office applications and GIS software (MapInfo, Micromine, etc…)
